The Redskins have released veteran safety Troy Vincent, the team announced on Thursday.
Vincent, who has played 15 years in the NFL, joined the Redskins midway through the 2006 season. He played in eight games, starting three at strong safety.
Vincent finished the season with 25 tackles (13 solo). He missed two games due to a hamstring injury.
He was involved in one of the more memorable--and bizarre--plays in Redskins history.
In Week 9 against Dallas, he blocked a last-second field goal attempt. The ball was scooped up by Sean Taylor, who raced downfield and put the Redskins in position to score. Nick Novak converted a game-winning field goal in a 22-19 win.
Vincent, who turns 36 in June, has had previous NFL stints with the Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills. He was a five-time Pro Bowl cornerback for the Eagles from 1999-2003.
With Vincent departed, the Redskins still have plenty of starting experience at the strong safety position. Vernon Fox finished the year as the starter and Adam Archuleta had seven starts early in the season.
Fox enters the offseason as an unrestricted free agent.
Pierson Prioleau is returning from a knee injury and he could compete for playing time as well. Youngster Reed Doughty, a 2006 sixth-round draft pick, could be in the mix as well.
