The Washington Redskins signed punter Andy Groom, the team announced on Thursday. To make room for Groom on the roster, the Redskins released wide receiver Gari Scott.

Groom, 6-0 and 196 pounds, signed as an undrafted free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2003 from Ohio State. He was released prior to the 2003 regular season.

Groom signed with the San Francisco 49ers in January 2004. He was released in late August prior to the start of the 2004 season.

Groom, 25, punted 109 times for 4,901 yards (45.0 avg.) with a long of 74 during his collegiate career at Ohio State. His 45.0 career average broke current Redskin Tom Tupa's school record set from 1984-1987.

He earned first-team selections from the Football Writers and the Associated Press All-America teams as a senior 2002. During his junior season, he was named to the second-team All-Big Ten with 49 punts for 2,204 yards (45.0 average).

Groom is a native of Columbus, Ohio, where he attended Bishop Hartley High School. He played quarterback and cornerback in addition to kicking duties.
