The Redskins have signed safety Lendy Holmes from the practice squad and released punter Sam Paulescu, the team announced on Saturday.
Paulescu's release means that Hunter Smith is healthy enough to punt in Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos.
Smith has missed three of the last four games due to a groin injury. He took part in practice on Friday and he recovered well from the workout.
Smith has 20 punts this season for a 43.4-yard average.
Holmes, a 6-1, 201-pound rookie out of Oklahoma, adds depth to a Redskins secondary that took a hit last week when Chris Horton suffered a toe injury. Horton was placed on injured reserve.
Holmes originally joined the Redskins on April 30 as an undrafted rookie free agent. He was a second-team All-Big XII selection in 2008.
Paulescu signed with the Redskins on Nov. 6 and played in last week's game against Atlanta. He had three punts for a 50.0-yard average.
