Redskins Sign Mix, Release DeMulling

The Redskins have added first-year wide receiver Anthony Mix to the active roster, the team announced on Tuesday. The Redskins signed him off of the New York Giants' practice squad.

To make room for Mix, the Redskins released offensive lineman Rick DeMulling.

Mix, a tall, rangy receiver who stands at 6-5 and 235 pounds, played in the Giants' first four games, catching three passes for 39 yards. He was moved back to the Giants' practice squad in Week 5.

"What we get here is a big receiver," head coach Joe Gibbs told Redskins Radio on Tuesday. "He's very fast. He's the right kind of person. And he also plays special teams."

Mix entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Giants in May 2006. He spent all of the 2006 season on the practice squad.

Mix played with Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell at Auburn. As a junior in 2004, he caught 19 passes from Campbell for 294 yards and three touchdowns.

For his career, Mix played in a total of 49 games, with 11 starts, and finished with 76 receptions for 1,010 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Redskins now have seven wide receivers on the active roster, but James Thrash has a sprained ankle and it's uncertain if he'll be available to play in this Sunday's game against Tampa Bay.

DeMulling's release could signal that right guard Randy Thomas could be nearing his return from a triceps injury suffered in Week 2.

The Redskins also announced a practice squad move on Tuesday: the team re-signed offensive lineman Calvin Armstrong and released wide receiver Burl Toler.
