The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed free agent cornerback Jerome Murphy.
In a corresponding more, the team placed safety Brandon Meriweather on its Reserve/Injured list.
Murphy (6-0, 200) was originally selected by the St. Louis Rams in the third round (65th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft.
Murphy appeared in 14 games with St. Louis as a rookie, registering 20 tackles (16 solo), one interception, three passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
He was acquired on waivers by the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 2, 2012, appearing for the Saints in Weeks 1-2 before being waived on Sept. 17.
He was acquired on waivers by the Detroit Lions on Sept. 19 and appeared in one game before being released by the Lions on Sept. 29.
Murphy, 25, played collegiately at South Florida, where he started 25 of the 51 career games in which he appeared from 2005-09. He compiled 202 tackles (148 solo), eight interceptions, 18 pass breakups, four forced fumbles and three fumbles recovered.
Murphy attended Elizabeth H.S. in Elizabeth, N.J., where he was named second team All-State after compiling 89 tackles and eight interceptions as a senior. He was born Jan. 13, 1987, in Elizabeth, N.J.
Meriweather, 28, appeared in one game with Washington after signing with the Redskins as an undrafted free agent on March 15, 2012.
In his Redskins debut last Sunday, Meriweather registered seven tackles (three solo), two passes defensed and an interception.
