The Redskins have signed Ryan Torain to the roster, promoting the second-year running back from the practice squad.

To make room for Torain, the Redskins released wide receiver/kick returner Brandon Banks.

Torain's presence gives the Redskins four running backs for Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams.

Clinton Portis is the expected starter, with Torain, rookie Keiland Williams and recent pickup Chad Simpson as backups.

Torain spent training camp and preseason with the Redskins. He led the offense with 94 yards on 28 carries, a 3.4 yards-per-carry average, and posted one catch for 22 yards.

In the Redskins' 42-17 preseason win over the Buffalo Bills on Aug. 13, Torain posted a team-high 62 yards on 17 carries, alternating snaps with rookie Keiland Williams.

It was Torain's first NFL action since 2008 when he was with the Denver Broncos. He had been sidelined with a series of injuries, including a knee ligament injury, since that season.
