The Redskins have signed offensive linemen Tam Hopkins and Tyler Lenda, the team announced on Thursday. Hopkins, who played for the Redskins in the 2001 preseason, and Lenda are both coming off of stints in NFL Europe.
In addition, the Redskins released offensive linemen Dominique Richardson on Thursday.
Hopkins, 6-4 and 290 pounds, entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the Redskins but was released prior to the start of the season. After a brief stint with Jacksonville, he signed with the New York Giants in 2002 and appeared in 16 games with one start. Last season, he was on the Minnesota Vikings roster but was released prior to the season.
During the 2005 NFL Europe season, Hopkins was with the Cologne Centurions. He played his college ball at Ohio State.
Lenda, 6-3 and 289 pounds, originally entered the NFL in 2003 as an undrafted free agent with the Denver Broncos. During the 2005 NFL Europe season he was on the roster of the World Bowl Champion Amsterdam Admirals. He played his college ball at Penn State.
Four others worked out for team officials at Redskins Park: defensive backs Artrell Hawkins and Jason Shivers, wide receiver Tony Johnson and defensive lineman Aris "Tank" Johnson. All four left the training facility without a contract offer.
The most notable of the four was Hawkins, an eight-year veteran cornerback who played for the Carolina Panthers last year. He played his first seven seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals.
In his career, Hawkins has 410 tackles (363 solo), 10 interceptions and three sacks.
Aris "Tank" Johnson, Shivers and Tony Johnson are first-year players. Tony Johnson hails from Washington, D.C.
