With Tom Tupa sidelined with a back injury, the Redskins signed veteran punter Chris Mohr on Monday. Mohr, 6-5 and 215 pounds, previously played for the Atlanta Falcons the last four seasons.

To make room for Mohr, the Redskins released running back Dahrran Diedrick with an injury settlement.

Mohr was originally a sixth round (146th overall) pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1986 NFL Draft. Entering his 16th NFL season, Mohr has also spent time on the rosters of Buffalo (10 seasons) and Atlanta (four seasons).

Overall, Mohr has appeared in 239 games and recorded 1,152 punts for 46,570 yards (40.4 avg.) with 281 inside the 20.

Mohr also can serve as a holder on field goal attempts. He played with Redskins long snapper Ethan Albright in Buffalo from 1994-2000.

"Chris has tons of experience and he's a very good holder," head coach Joe Gibbs said. "Those are two critical positions and we're just trying to make sure we make the right selection as to who's going to get the job there."

Tupa's injury status bears watching over the next week. He suffered a back injury during warm-ups before the Redskins' preseason game against Cincinnati on Aug. 19.

First-year punter Andy Groom replaced Tupa each of the last two games and has performed well as both a punter and holder for Redskins place kickers. For preseason, Groom has punted 13 times for a 42.3-yard average, with a long of 56 yards. He has landed six punts inside the 20.
