The Washington Redskins added to their draft capital Friday night, trading a third-round pick (No. 96 overall) to the Buffalo Bills for a pair or fourth-rounders (112th and 131st overall). The move gives the Redskins seven picks entering Day 3 of the NFL Draft, which covers rounds four through seven on Saturday.
"The chance to get two players for one," head coach Jay Gruden responded when asked about trading back. "We have a bunch of guys that are clumped together right now. We lost a couple of guys, but I think the ability to get another extra player was the key."
The Redskins have made three picks over the draft's first two days, starting with their selection of Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins at No. 15. They subsequently exchanged their second-round pick and a second-rounder in 2020 for the 26th overall selection, which they used to draft Mississippi State edge defender Montez Sweat.
Following Friday night's selection of Ohio State wide receiver Terry McLaurin (76th overall), Gruden said the team felt comfortable moving back. Now it'll go back to the draft board, hoping to make the most of its extra selection.
"We don't want to just key in on one position," Gruden said. "If we think we need another player in another position, we're going to take him. I think it's very important to let the board do the talking for us. We put a lot of time and work into that thing, and the rankings are there for a purpose, so we'll have to go by that."
