The Washington Redskins announced Aug. 14 they have acquired cornerback Mike Rumph in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers. In exchange for Rumph, the Redskins traded wide receiver Taylor Jacobs to the 49ers.

Rumph, 6-2 and 206 pounds, is in his fifth year in the NFL after being selected by the 49ers in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft from the University of Miami.

Rumph has started 19 games with 36 appearances in his career and has compiled 120 tackles (99 solo) with three interceptions and 12 passes defensed.

In 2005, he was limited to three games due to a foot injury but managed 10 tackles (nine solo) in those three starts at the safety position. He was again limited due to a forearm injury in 2004, starting two games and recording two tackles.

Rumph had his breakout NFL season in 2003 when he emerged with 64 tackles (56 solo), two sacks and three interceptions and one forced fumble. He started 13 games and appeared in 15. As a rookie in 2002 he posted 40 tackles (29 solo) with four passes defensed and a forced fumble in 16 games including one start.

Rumph also brings the total of University of Miami alums to six, playing for the Hurricanes from 1998 to 2001 and posting 36 starts, 164 tackles (117 solo) and six interceptions. He was first team All-Big East as a senior in 2001 and was a teammate of Clinton Portis, Santana Moss and Sean Taylor.
