In today's Rewarding Moments In Redskins History presented byMaryland Lottery My Lottery Rewards, we focus on a 1991 Week 16 matchup between Washington and the New York Giants where the Redskins continued to build on a spectacular season.
As the 1991 season's end neared, the Redskins entered the contest with a 13-1 record, looking to gain a second big division win against the New York Giants on Dec. 15 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.
The Giants started the scoring with a 36-yard field goal by kicker Matt Bohr early in the first quarter, before the Redskins answered with 65-yard touchdown by wide receiver Gary Clark.
The second quarter began with a Phil Simms one-yard touchdown run to put New York up 10-7, but it was the last time the visitors would hold a lead. The Redskins scored the next 20 points in the ball game before the Giants added a late touchdown from Mark Ingram Sr.
A 50-yard touchdown reception from Clark would seal the fate of the game, and give the Redskins a 34-17 victory. Advancing to 14-1, Washington played well in all phases of the game. Quarterback Mark Rypien threw for three scores, the offense ran for over 100 yards on the ground and the defense recorded four sacks while forcing three turnovers.
The Week 16 performance was just one of the many bright spots of the 1991 season, as Washington would end that year's campaign by hoisting a Super Bowl Trophy.
