In today's Rewarding Moments In Redskins History presented by Maryland Lottery My Lottery Rewards, we remember the Redskins' overtime victory of the Houston Oilers during the team's 1991 Super Bowl Run.
Fresh off a win against the New York Giants to advance to 8-0 on the season, Washington welcomed the Oilers to town for what would be another exciting game. With Houston holding a record of 7-1 coming into the game, the battle would feature two NFL heavyweights, and it did not disappoint.
The first half of the game proved to be a defensive battle, as both teams were held scoreless during the opening quarter of action. Though the Redskins began the second quarter with a 21-yard field goal by kicker Chip Lohmiller, the Oilers responded with two completed field goals by kicker, Ian Howfield, bringing the score to 6-3 in favor of Houston going into halftime.
Both teams remained deadlocked in the second half. After Lohmiller tied the game during the third quarter with another field goal, Houston and Washington traded touchdowns. A 23-yard touchdown by Redskins running back Earnest Byner and a one-yard touchdown by Oilers running back Lorenzo White, resulted in the contested being tied 13-13 as the teams headed for overtime.
In the extra period, Lohmiller ended it all with a 41-yard field goal to give Washington a 16-13 victory. The win kept the Redskins undefeated at 9-0, and the team would improve to 11-0 to begin the season. Eventually, Washington would finish the year as Super Bowl Champions.
