Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III on Tuesday said his comments earlier in the week about his self-confidence as a quarterback were taken out of context.*
Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III on Tuesday met with reporters to address comments he made earlier in the week that set off a firestorm among national media outlets.
In an interview Sunday with WJLA-TV, Griffin III said: "I feel like I'm the best quarterback in the league, and I have to go out and show that. Any athlete at any level, if they concede to someone else, they're not a top competitor, they're not trying to be the best that they can be."
He finished by saying: "There's guys in this league that have done way more than me. But I still view myself as the best because that's what I work toward every single day."
The comments were picked up and debated nationally on outlets such as ESPN and the NFL Network, setting off a firestorm about the fourth-year quarterback out of Baylor.
Griffin III addressed the comments after Tuesday's practice at the team's headquarters in Loudoun County, Va., saying, "I know what I meant. I think everyone who is in this circle knows what I meant."
"It's just unfortunate that my name keeps getting used for headlines, for people to click on stories," Griffin III continued.
Asked about Griffin III's "best quarterback in the league comment" on Tuesday, Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said he felt the reaction was media driven.
"I didn't really make a lot of out it – you guys did," Gruden said. "I think all players want to strive to be the best … Robert has high goals for himself."
Griffin III, whose Redskins continue their preseason Thursday against the Detroit Lions at FedExField, said he'll always be confident in his abilities.
"I know what I want to be. I know what I strive to be," he said. "And I'm not going to make any apologies for that."
