Redskins linebacker Ryan Kerrigan on Friday unveiled his first "Kerrigan's Korner" electronic hub at Children's National in Washington, D.C.

When children have to make an extended stay in the hospital, doctors say keeping the mind stimulated is one of the most important factors of recovery.

So with this in mind, Redskins outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan two years ago set forth on a mission to provide children who are battling various serious illnesses with an electronic hub full of games and movies to ensure their stay in the hospital is the absolute best it can be.

On Friday Kerrigan saw the results of this mission, as he unveiled his first "Kerrigan's Korner" electronic hub at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

The hub – made possible through the work of Kerrigan's Blitz For The Better Foundation – was exactly what the fifth-year linebacker envisioned two years ago, as several children were already playing games with their family and nurses immediately after the unveiling.

"It couldn't have worked out any better," Kerrigan said. "I mean, we've been wanting to do this for a long time now, and we've done a really nice job of raising money and getting everything in order for it. And to actually have the unveiling and to already see a couple of the youngsters come and experience the Kerrigan's Korner was pretty cool."

Kerrigan founded his Blitz For The Better Foundation in 2013 to provide opportunities, support and resources to children and families in need in the greater Washington, D.C., area. Kerrigan's inspiration for the foundation is his cousin, who has special needs, giving the Muncie, Ind., native a specific focus to help seriously ill, special needs and physically challenged children.

Kerrigan toured many patients' rooms after his Kerrigan's Korner unveiling on Friday, and said "it makes you feel good knowing that you're having a positive effect on these children that, unfortunately, have an extended stay at the hospital.

"So it was definitely a touching thing, and is really a nice feeling knowing that my foundation is helping these individuals," he continued.

The initial Kerrigan's Korner electronic hub unveiled on Friday was dedicated to Wayne K. Curry, a former Prince George's county executive who was one of the first board members of the Blitz For The Better Foundation.

Curry passed away last July.

"He was responsible for getting a number of people to join our board and was really one of the ones who laid the groundwork for the Blitz For The Better's development," Kerrigan said. "I know he was very involved throughout Washington, D.C., even prior to coming on board with the Blitz For The Better Foundation, and I know he was a very well respected member of the community."

Kerrigan said the hope is to continue raising funds so that he can continue installing Kerrigan Korners in hospitals around the Washington, D.C., area.

"We're looking to expand," he said.
