Redskins players took the field this afternoon for the first time since returning from Buffalo, completing the first of three remaining training camp practices.
Most of practice was devoted to full team drills, with the offense operating in the red zone, and then turning around to drive from their own 20-yard line.
It was a big day for some of the unheralded players on offense, as receivers Dezmon Briscoe, Joshua Morgan, Aldrick Robinson, Samuel Kirkland and Niles Paul each made impressive catches.
Quarterback Kirk Cousins was behind several of those throws, finding Briscoe in the back of the end zone for a leaping touchdown reception. Later in practice, he found Robinson down the near sideline, who caught the ball in stride and sprinted untouched for the score.
Cousins also found rookie receiver Samuel Kirkland in double coverage, threading it between cornerbacks Travon Bellamy and Richard Crawford. After the catch, Kirkland showboated his way into the end zone.
Quarterback Rex Grossman hit Morgan and Paul for big completions, but was also picked off by safety Reed Doughty, who jumped a sideline route and made an athletic play.
It was a lighter workload for the starting offense today, which was countered by a strong defensive performance.
London Fletcher haulted a red zone drive led by quarterback Robert Griffin III, picking off a pass over the middle and taking a knee. Fletcher may be in his 15th professional season, but he still injects life and fun into practice with his play and demeanor.
Safety DeJon Gomes nearly intercepted Grossman later in practice, running out of real estate along the sidelines. Gomes had a strong night in Buffalo, finishing with four tackles on limited snaps.
Special teams drills were heavily featured in practice today, as punt returners Brandon Banks, Richard Crawford and Aldrick Robinson returned live punts from Sav Rocca.
Despite a significant cross-breeze, Rocca unofficially averaged upwards of 4.8 second on his hangtime, and boomed the kicks deep downfield.
Players are off on Sundays, meaning no open practice tomorrow. Open practices resume on Monday and conclude on Tuesday.
