Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan said that all Redskins teams under his watch will be characterized by physicality and a passion for the game of football.*
Scot McCloughan's expectations for the 2015 Washington Redskins have nothing to do with numbers.
They have everything to do with effort.
Hired in January to get the franchise back on track after just seven combined wins the past two seasons, McCloughan said he's already noticed a change among the Redskins' players, coaches and front office personnel as they head into their second week of training camp practices at the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center in Richmond, Va.
"I'm not going to put a number on it," McCloughan said when asked how many wins would constitute a successful season to him in 2015. "I've been here for … seven months, being able to be see this offseason and see the coaches excited, see the players getting better every day."
McCloughan touched on the subject to reporters on Sunday in a press conference featuring questions mostly centered on the back story of last week's signing of outside linebacker Junior Galette, who boasts an impressive skillset on the field, but brings some baggage off of it, as well.
McCloughan said he pushed to meet with Galette as soon as he was released by the New Orleans Saints, but made more than 20 calls to various league officials to check on the Stillman College product's attitude and heart.
When Galette met with McCloughan, he quickly found he had walked right in the middle of a grill session by a high-profile general manager that possibly wanted his duties, but needed to hear that his problems were behind him.
Two hours later, Galette was ready to sign his new Redskins contract – a reported one-year deal for the league minimum.
"He came in and, I'm telling you, when he left my room, the guy was crying, he was sweating, he was so excited to be a Redskin," McCloughan said. "You know, that's passion. That's what I'm looking for is competitiveness and toughness. Now, he has to walk the line and he knows that. And he will. If he doesn't, then he's gone, plain and simple."
That passion, competitiveness and toughness has been the hallmark of McCloughan's teams whenever he handles the creation of the roster. It was a successful approach when he was a front office executive and general manager with the San Francisco 49ers and it was successful when he was a personnel executive with the Seattle Seahawks
And, as long as he's calling the shots, it will be the same in Washington.
"I know this: when you play the Redskins this year, you're going to know you played us," McCloughan said. "You're going to feel us from the standpoint of being physical. The next morning, you're going to be sore."
McCloughan acknowledged it's unrealistic to believe the Redskins could ever win every game they play, but the team is going to compete "no matter what."
"We're going get after you and we'll not back down from anything. I promise you, we will not back down from anything," he said. "If we do, changes will be made, but we're not going to. We're going to get after it."
