The Redskins have finalized a contract extension with veteran fullback Mike Sellers.
Redskins.com's Larry Weisman reports that Sellers' deal is a 2-year extension through 2012. The deal actually includes two more years but they void automatically if Sellers is on the roster five days after the Super Bowl in 2013.
Sellers has been a consistent, powerful force in the Redskins' running game most of this decade.
"For what I do for this team, the little things that people don't acknowledge, I felt it was time," Sellers said. "They took care of me."
Last season, Sellers earned his first Pro Bowl nod as a 6-3, 273-pound blocking fullback for the Redskins' ground game. The offense was ranked 8th in the NFL in rushing yards last year.
The honors for Sellers continued in preseason this year when Sellers was named a team captains for his work on special teams.
"Mike is very vocal and he is really a team guy," Jim Zorn said after Wednesday's practice. "He has been very vocal about pulling guys together and holding guys accountable. He has been very reliable, too. That's what you want from your better players. And he's certainly one of them."
Zorn added that Sellers has improved this year because he knows the offense better.
"He knows the offense like he has read the playbook five times and he understands all of the chapters in the book," Zorn said. "He knows what to do and he knows what happens on a play."
For his career, Sellers has caught 85 passes for 680 yards and 16 touchdowns and he has compiled 156 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 46 carries.
