Cornerback Shawn Springs suffered a broken shoulder blade in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams at the Edward Jones Dome.
The injury happened on the Redskins' first defensive series and Springs did not return to the game. He was replaced in the lineup by Kenny Wright, with Ade Jimoh serving in nickel packages.
The Rams targeted Springs on the game's first play, throwing deep to wide receiver Isaac Bruce. Springs leaped up and nearly made an interception, but he landed hard on the turf, suffering the injury.
Springs stayed in the game and, two plays later, quarterback Marc Bulger tossed a 4-yard pass to Bruce and Springs came up and made the tackle.
Afterwards, Springs went to the sidelines and was immediately evaluated by athletic trainers. He was taken into the locker room for X-rays.
Team officials are expected to determine Springs' status later this week. With one game remaining on the schedule, it appears likely that Springs' season has come to an end.
It has been an injury-plagued season for Springs, a 10-year NFL veteran. He was sidelined for the first five games of the season following abdominal surgery last August and missed a sixth game with a hamstring injury.
Entering Sunday's game against St. Louis, the Redskins' defense was already without linebacker Marcus Washington, who was placed on injured reserve on Dec. 23 with a sprained knee.
The defense struggled to keep up with the Rams, who compiled 579 yards of total offense and 382 yards in the passing game. The Rams came from behind to win 37-31 in overtime.
In the second half, defensive end Phillip Daniels was hit in the throat and had to leave the game. At one point, he appeared to be gasping for air on the sidelines, so he was taken into the locker room for tests.
Team officials reported that Daniels's condition had improved, but he did not return to the game. Renaldo Wynn stepped in to take his place and played the rest of the game.
The team also reported that safety Vernon Fox had suffered a thumb injury, but he did not leave the game.
