The Washington Redskins announced today that head football coach Ed Shields of Suitland High School in Forestville, MD has been named Redskins High School Coach of the Week for the week of September 27, 2010.

The Redskins High School Coach of the Week program is designed to recognize and reward excellence in high school football coaching.

Shields' has been coaching at Suitland for six years with this season being his second as head coach. Previously, Shields was the head coach at Northwestern High School where he was named the Prince George's County Coach of the Year in 1998. In his two years as head coach at Suitland, Shields has a 13-2 record, including a playoff appearance last season. The Rams are currently 4-0 and ranked #19 in the Washington Post High School Football Rankings.

Coach Shields supports his players' efforts on the field as well as in the classroom by instituting mandatory study hall for his student-athletes four days a week. Coach Shields and his staff also promote the importance of education by speaking to local youth whom participate in the county's local youth football teams. Shields' excels in his community efforts and in his ability to lead in the face of adversity as demonstrated after former head coach Nick Lynch suddenly passed. Shields "provided the student-athletes support in their time of grieving as well as set up conditioning programs to keep the student-athletes working and focused; all before he was officially announced as the new head coach. On paper he wasn't the second or even third in charge, but because of his past coaching and organizational skills, he took on the role of leader" says Athletic Director, George McClure.

Each week during the 2010 high school football season, the Redskins will select one area high school head coach as the Redskins High School Coach of the Week. The selection is based on the coach's continuing commitment towards promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes, his overall community involvement and overall team performance and record.

Each of the coaches chosen throughout the high school season will receive a $1,000 donation from the NFL Youth Football Fund to their football program and a framed certificate signed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Redskins Head Coach Mike Shanahan and Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen.
