For today's Throwback Thursday moment presented by SUBWAY®restaurants*, Redskins.com looks back at Clinton Portis's starring role – throwing and running – in a win over the Detroit Lions.*
Thirty-four rushes for 147 yards was a very good day for Redskins running back Clinton Portis. However, his running the ball on a November day in 2004 wasn't his biggest impact in a win over the Lions.
Instead, it was Portis's 15-yard touchdown pass to Laveranues Coles early in the third quarter gave the Redskins a lead they would not relinquish in a 17-10 win over Detroit on Nov. 7, 2004.
The Redskins couldn't get much going through the air as quarterback Mark Brunell was 6-of-17 for 58 yards, so Washington turned to trickery as Portis found Coles on an option pass to put Washington up 10-3 with 10:25 remaining in the third. It was Portis' first career touchdown pass, as he went on to throw a TD in 2005 and 2007.
The Redskins added another touchdown later as Walt Harris returned a blocked punt 13 yards. Portis did the rest as he averaged 4.3 yards per carry on his way to one of five 100-yard games that season.
