Linebacker Marcus Washington suffered a dislocated right elbow during Saturday's preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. His status will be announced in the coming days, but that is an injury that could sideline him several weeks.
"One thing about Marcus is that I know he'll be back as soon as he can get back," head coach Joe Gibbs said. "He's tough. He has handled injuries like this in the past. He's had other injuries at different times, and he has always bounced back."
Washington suffered the injury after he was driven into a pile on a running play in the second quarter. He was taken into the locker room for x-rays.
"[Doctors] have X-rayed everything and they feel like there are no [bone] chips in there," Gibbs said. "With that one, it will just be a matter of how fast he can come back."
Washington, who had also been playing some defensive end in Gregg Williams' defense, was initially replaced by Khary Campbell in the lineup.
However, it's possible that Lemar Marshall could be the replacement when the Redskins take on the Baltimore Ravens in the third preseason game next Saturday.
Marshall has the versatility and experience to line up at any linebacker position. He was the Redskins' middle linebacker last year, but he was replaced by London Fletcher this season.
Also, wide receiver Mike Espy suffered a season-ending left knee injury in the second half of the game.
Espy was untouched as he ran downfield on a pass pattern. His knee suddenly buckled underneath him and he had to be carted into the locker room for further evaluation. He did not return to the game.
Espy had been hoping to earn a roster spot this preseason, after working on the practice squad most of last season.

Rock Cartwright, slowed by a hamstring injury, did not play in Saturday's preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Cartwright's absence impacted the Redskins in two areas: running back and the kick return unit.
With Clinton Portis sidelined with knee tendonitis, the Redskins started Ladell Betts at running back. He was followed by Derrick Blaylock and rookie Marcus Mason.
On kick returns, James Thrash was listed as Cartwright's backup on kick returns, but Thrash was also inactive due to an abdominal injury.
Blaylock and rookie Carl Berman were back to field kickoffs at the start of the game. Dee Brown and John Eubanks also fielded kickoffs during the game.
As expected, Mike Pucillo started in place of Todd Wade at left guard. Wade, slowed by a shoulder injury, did not play in the game.
Also, Stephon Heyer drew the start at left tackle again. He replaced Chris Samuels, who continues to rehab a knee injury.
Other Redskins deactivated for Saturday's game included cornerback Ade Jimoh (illness), tight end Tyler Ecker (groin), defensive end Jamaal Green (shoulder) and left tackle Chris Samuels (knee).
