The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation brought the NFL's Think Pink! initiative to W.T. Woodson High School in Fairfax, VA in order to raise awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness.
The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation and Fairfax County Public Schools partnered to host the third annual Friday Night Lights: Think Pink! game at Woodson High School in Fairfax, Va., on Oct. 14.
As fans entered the W.T. Woodson High School football stadium in Fairfax, Va. on Friday, Oct. 14, the school colors of blue and white were overshadowed by a sea of pink that stretched from the end zone to the stands. W.T. Woodson hosted the third annual Friday Night Lights: Think Pink! in partnership with the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation and Fairfax County Public Schools, which aims to bring the visibility of the NFL's breast cancer awareness initiatives to a local level during the month of October.
The First Ladies of Football greeted fans from both W.T. Woodson and the visiting team, the Lake Braddock Bruins, handing out hot pink pom poms and rally towels to spread the spirit throughout the stadium. Athletes for both teams were decked on in pink compression sleeves and socks, while the school's facilities used goal post pads and field banners featured in the Redskins annual Breast Cancer Awareness game.
Individuals in attendance also had to opportunity to purchase the Charitable Foundation's limited editionFight Breast Cancer t-shirts, designed by Redskins Alumnus Chris Cooley, with proceeds benefitting the ZTA Foundation and the Brem Foundation.The Brem Foundation is dedicated to educating women about risk factors and screening options and providing access to critical diagnostic tests for uninsured women.
While a line began to form at the t-shirt table, another line was forming further down the field as more than 600 elementary and middle school students decked out in head-to-toe pinked poured onto the field to sing the National Anthem for those in attendance. The chorus, made of students from W.T. Woodson's feeder schools, helped continue the think pink messaging after the anthem as they joined the fans in the stands for the game.
Amidst the crowd of pink, a few special guests were also waiting, as second-year guard Arie Kouandjio and practice squad center Ronald Patrick joined the W.T. Woodson Cavaliers as honorary captains for the coin toss, while former Redskins wide receiver and Super Bowl champion Virgil Seay took on a similar captain's role for Lake Braddock. Seay is a former Lake Braddock assistant coach and current coach for the George Mason club football team.
The event kicked off a weekend of Breast Cancer Awareness initiatives, taking place prior to the Redskins' annual BCA Game at FedExField on Sunday and the ninth-annual All-Star Survivors Celebration at the Inova Sports Performance Center at Redskins Park in Loudoun County, Va. on Monday.
