Trent Williams knows how important it is to report to training camp on time.
As the Redskins' first-round pick, fourth overall, in last April's NFL Draft, Williams is expected to start at left tackle.
He has earned the confidence of the coaching staff, but he still faces a significant learning curve.
Especially if he wants to, by his standards, have a successful rookie season.
"I want to make the Pro Bowl," Williams said on the last day of the Redskins' June mini-camp. "It's a goal. You always set your goals high. If you shoot high and you fall just short, then you're still pretty high."
It would not be unprecedented. Brian Orakpo earned a Pro Bowl berth as a Redskins rookie last year.
To accomplish that goal, Williams must be on hand to get as many training camp reps as possible.
In recent years, many first-round draft picks have reported late to training camp as their agents negotiate their rookie contracts.
Orakpo missed one day of training camp last year. LaRon Landry, the club's 2007 first-rounder, missed three days of training camp.
Obviously Williams hopes to be signed, sealed and delivered by the start of training camp on July 29.
"I can't guarantee that it won't be a minor holdout, but I can guarantee it won't be more than a day, if I do," Williams said. "Obviously I want to be here. They have me working with the first group, so I really can't afford to miss any practice time. I'm going to stress that to my agent and see if I can get to camp on time."
Complicating matters is that Williams is apparently switching agents. This was reported by several media outlets last week.
Williams said he expected to be back at Redskins Park in early July to resume workouts and preparation for the season.
He feels that he has adjusted well to the Redskins' offense and that he is ready for the start of training camp.
Practicing with the pads is the next step in his NFL development.
"I'm very pleased with Trent," offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said. "He looks like what we thought we were getting and we've been impressed with his mentality. He's been working hard. [The game] doesn't seem too big for him and if continues I think he'll be where we expect him to be."
Shanahan's comments were made before the Redskins acquired offensive tackle Jammal Brown in a trade with the New Orleans Saints.
Brown is a two-time Pro Bowl left tackle. With the Redskins, he is expected to play right tackle.
That means Williams stays on the left side.
Redskins coaches have placed a premium on quick and agile offensive linemen, but they have not asked him to lose weight.
"I'm really just a couple pounds over from the [NFL Scouting Combine], but this is football and the weight thing, just playing ball it will always stay maintained," he said. "So I'm really not worried about that. My focus is to just stay consistent."
