With Hall Hurt, A 'Real Concern' At Kicker

John Hall experienced soreness in his upper leg last weekend, and head coach Joe Gibbs indicated on Monday that the team could search for a replacement this week.

"This is something we have to address," Gibbs said. "The good thing with John is that he's been so up front and honest with me. He doesn't try and hide anything. I think this is something that is a real concern for us. We have to do whatever we have to do."

Gibbs described Hall's injury as soreness that went from "his thigh area to his groin."

Redskins director of sports medicine Bubba Tyer listed it as strained groin and strained thigh injury.

Hall first experienced the soreness and fatigue in his upper leg during practice last week, Gibbs said. On Saturday, coaches and athletic trainers decided to restrict Hall to field goals in Sunday's game against the New York Giants. Derrick Frost was used on kickoffs.

Hall, a 10-year NFL veteran, has battled injuries each of the last two years. He has been sidelined by a series of leg and groin ailments. Last offseason, he had surgery to address recurring soreness in his groin area and he entered the 2006 season confident that his injuries were behind him.

On Sunday against the Giants, Hall connected on a 39-yard field goal in the first half, but he missed a 42-yard attempt in the third quarter.

The Redskins trailed 16-3 at the time, and Hall's miss seemed to halt the Redskins' offensive momentum.

"I made the decision [to have Hall try the field goal]," Gibbs said. "He had already kicked a field goal in the game. I felt like he was kicking fine, and so did our trainers. I think he hit it well enough, it just went left. Maybe he was compensating--I don't know."

Gibbs and the Redskins' athletic trainers continue to meet with Hall and work with him in addressing his injury.
