Following the chaos of early free agency and the excitement of the NFL Draft, the organization geared up for yet another spring tradition: the Redskins Charity Golf Classic -- which was held Monday at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, Va.
The fifth-annual event brought together players, coaches, alumni and fans for a day of golfing and networking to benefit the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation and the Redskins Alumni Association.
"Just to be out here in front of the community, talk to fans," defensive lineman Jonathan Allen said. "Just shaking hands and meeting people, it's never a bad thing to connect."
Allen was one of a dozen current Redskins players who participated in the Redskins Charity Golf Classic presented by PepsiCo -- joining Case Keenum, Trey Quinn and Brandon Scherff, among others. President Bruce Allen and Vice President of Player Personnel Doug Williams also brought out their clubs for the event, as did head coach Jay Gruden and several assistant coaches.
Plus, there were more than 20 Redskins' alumni in attendance, including Gary Clark, Brad Edwards, Ricky Ervins, London Fletcher and Mark Moseley.
Following media availability with Gruden and select players, the participants congregated in the ballroom for opening remarks and then headed down to the course for a shotgun start. For the next several hours, they competed in a golf scramble and mini competitions -- such as "longest drive" and "closest to the hole" -- while mingling with Redskins' personnel on a beautiful spring afternoon.
The main prize on the line for the day was an all-expense paid trip to the Super Bowl of Golf. The principal innovation of the NFL Alumni Foundation Golf Tour, all winning teams from the tournament series receive all-expense paid invitations to the championship playoff, held at a warm-weather resort the following spring.
The conclusion of the golf round gave way to a silent auction, during which participants could bid on autographed Redskins' memorabilia and other luxuries, before dinner capped the charitable event along with the announcement of the grand prize winners; Tress Way's foursome featuring members of his family!
The net proceeds of the tournament, which totaled approximately $300,000 for the third straight year, will again benefit the Redskins Charitable Foundation's Loads of Love program, which aims to install laundry facilities in schools and non-profit organizations to directly impact children experiencing homelessness or an unstable living situation at no cost to them or their families.
The Redskins Charitable Foundation brought together the 2019 team, coaching staff, and alumni out on the course for a great event that benefited children in our community. The Tournament is a net scramble format with an NFL Alumni or current player Team Captain leading each foursome.
In partnership with Redskins longsnapper Nick Sundberg, the Foundation launched the program in the summer of 2017, and since has implemented 47 locations across the Washington Metropolitan Area. The goal, Sundberg said, is to reach 150 total locations by the end of the calendar year.
"They do such amazing work," Sundberg said of the Redskins Charitable Foundation, "and they've propelled this program forward in such a way that I never thought was imaginable."
