Zorn, Redskins Set to Resume OTAs

For Jim Zorn, every Redskins practice is another step.

He has been measured in how much of the West Coast offense he wants to introduce to players this offseason.

Zorn doesn't want them to learn too much, too soon. He doesn't want them overwhelmed.

But he is also eager to move on to the next step.

The team continues its on-field work on Monday when OTAs resume at Redskins Park. The practices are voluntary and players will be in shorts, no pads.

Rookies are back, including top draft picks Devin Thomas, Fred Davis and Malcolm Kelly. Even though draft picks don't have rookie contracts yet, they are allowed to participate in off-season OTAs.

"We have to put in a load more [plays on offense]," he said. "We will have 80 percent of it done by the time we are done with June OTAs. There are still different areas we need to work on.

"We haven't put in short yardage or goal line. We just introduced red zone. There area a lot of situational things that we still have to do."

As players learn the terminology and formations, Zorn and his offensive coaching staff can look ahead to training camp, identify positional battles and determine how best to structure practices in July and August.

"The more we can get in now and give them, it won't be something new once we get to training camp," he said. "It will be just review. We just have to continue to push towards getting the team as far down the road as we can. The OTAs really help that way."

Jason Campbell has fully recovered from a mild hamstring injury he sustained during OTA work. His progress in learning the West Coast offense remains one of the keys to the Redskins' offseason.

Antwaan Randle El had arthroscopic knee surgery on May 6 and his availability for OTAs is uncertain.

The timetable for returning from a knee scope is typically four weeks, so it's possible Randle El could participate at least on a limited basis.

Meantime, defensive coordinator Greg Blache expects to evaluate his players based on how quickly they learn the scheme and adjust at the line of scrimmage.

Practices are more of a mental challenge than a physical one, Blache said.

"This is for guys to show us how intelligent they are," Blache said. "They're not going to show us how tough they are because we don't have pads on. Right now, it's strictly, 'Can you learn the system? Can you handle the stress and pressure of calls as formations change?'

"This is good for the veterans to understand what we have in the packages, and what we've taken out of the packages. And it's a good for young guys to get caught up and show us that they belong in training camp.

"Then, come training camp, the competition really starts physically."

Blache could be without three of his players--and two projected starters--for OTAs.

Carlos Rogers is not expected to participate as he continues to rehab from a knee ligament injury suffered last season.

Rocky McIntosh is also rehabbing a knee ligament injury suffered last season, but he hopes to participate in some individual drills.

Kedric Golston has an ankle injury suffered in the May 2-4 mini-camp. He could be available, but his status remains uncertain.
