In between evaluating college prospects at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Jim Zorn talked football with local and national media last weekend.

It was Zorn's first major NFL event as Redskins head coach.

Zorn spent 10 minutes in an interview with NFL Network's Steve Mariucci last Friday.

Among the topics that Zorn discussed was the Redskins' needs heading into free agency and the NFL Draft.

Zorn pointed to safety, cornerback, wide receiver and offensive and defensive lines as positions the team could address.

"We lost Sean Taylor, and there was some shuffling going on there," he said. "So we need to make sure we're solid there. I think we're always looking for cornerbacks, offensive linemen and defensive linemen.

"We have some good receivers. If we have a young guy who can step up, then that's great. If not, we'd have to look at a bigger receiver [to complement] Antwaan Randle El and Santana Moss."

Beyond personnel, Zorn's biggest challenge this offseason lies in instructing the Redskins' new offense.

Zorn, previously the quarterbacks coach in Seattle under Mike Holmgren before joining the Redskins, will lead a transition to the West Coast offense this offseason.

The West Coast offense emphasizes a short passing game to help stretch the defenses out and open up running lanes.

"I'm going to try to be like [Holmgren] and keep things pure," Zorn said. "What we did in Seattle--and Mike encouraged this as well--was we used attachments. There were plays we'd run on third downs where you'd say, 'This is not the West Coast Offense. I don't recognize this at all.'

"You'd start to see some of the innovation in some of these patterns that we were attaching to the West Coast offense and the personnel groupings. As Mike saw those attachments working, he got comfortable with them."

For players, the challenge is in learning new terminology, Zorn said.

"We'll keep it simple, keep it rhythmic, and if we're going to attach something, we'll make it so [players] can understand it," he said.

Zorn was asked how he would instruct fourth-year quarterback Jason Campbell.

Campbell, fully healthy again after suffering a dislocated kneecap injury on Dec. 6, has been named the Redskins' starter by Zorn.

Said Zorn: "I think it'll be a lot like when Matt [Hasselbeck] came in [at Seattle]. You start with a package, and then as you see the proficiency in the quarterback, you can expand on it. We started to expand with Matt.

"Some of that will be up to Jason and our offense to get it. As they execute it, can we continue to expand it? That'll be one of the more difficult things to discover: how much can they handle and still work fast and efficient?"

Lastly, Zorn was asked by Mariucci about the Redskins' matchup next season with the Seattle Seahawks at Qwest Field.

Zorn was a star quarterback for the Seahawks from 197-84 and served as quarterbacks coach from 2001-07.

It's sure to be an emotional day for Zorn.

"I'm just hoping that I'm prepared and that my team is prepared," he said.
