The Washington Commanders announced today they have named Bobby Johnson as the team's offensive line coach. Â Â
Johnson joins the Commanders after serving as the offensive line coach for the New York Giants for two seasons (2022-23). Â
From 2022-23, the Giants offense ranked ninth in the league in rushing yards per game (129.2) and tied for eighth in yards per attempt (4.5). In 2022, Johnson's unit was instrumental in running back Saquon Barkley rushing for a career-high 1,312 yards. Tackle Andrew Thomas earned Associated Press second-team All-Pro honors.
Prior to joining the Giants, Johnson spent three seasons (2019-21) with the Buffalo Bills as offensive line coach. During his time with the Bills, the offense finished second (31.3 – 2020) and third (28.4 – 2021) in points per game. In 2021, tackle Dion Dawkins earned Pro Bowl honors for the first time in his career. Â
In 2018, Johnson served as the assistant offensive line coach for the Indianapolis Colts. From 2015-17, he was the tight ends coach for the Oakland Raiders. Â
Johnson spent two seasons with the Detroit Lions, first as the tight ends coach (2013) and then as assistant offensive line coach (2014). During his first year with Detroit, tight ends Brandon Pettigrew and undrafted rookie Joseph Fauria combined for nine touchdowns. Â
He served one year as the tight ends coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2012 and two years (2010-11) as the assistant offensive line coach with the Buffalo Bills.
From 2005-09, Johnson served as the offensive line coach at Indiana University and developed two NFL linemen, Rodger Saffold and James Brewer. Â
Before his time in Indiana, Johnson was at Miami (Ohio) as tight ends coach from 1999-2003 and offensive line coach in 2004 and helped the team to a 13-1 season and a MAC championship in 2003. Â
Johnson began his coaching career at the University of Akron as a graduate assistant in 1995 and was promoted to defensive line coach in 1997. Â
An Akron, Ohio native, Johnson was a starting tackle at Miami (Ohio) from 1992-94 and helped the RedHawks average 156.7 rushing yards per game in 1992 and 174.4 yards in 1994. Â
He graduated with a degree in health and appraisal and sports organization. Â
Johnson and his wife, Kristen, have two daughters.
