The Washington Commanders have named William Gay as the team's assistant defensive backs coach. Â
Gay joins the Commanders with 11 years of playing experience – 10 with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2007-11; 2013-17) and one with the Arizona Cardinals (2012). He most recently served as the defensive backs coach at Missouri State in 2020.
In 2019, Gay served as a coaching assistant for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Â
He played in 176 games, making 101 starts and recording 577 total tackles, 13 interceptions, 87 passes defensed, 34 tackles for loss, 10 forced fumbles and five interception return touchdowns, which is tied for the most in Steelers history. Â
Gay was named the recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award in 2015 and was Pittsburgh's Walter Payton Man of the Year Nominee in 2014. Gay attended the University of Louisville and earned first-team All-Big East honors in 2006. He majored in sports administration. Â
A native of Tallahassee, Fla., Gay attended Richard Highschool and is the son of Corine Hall.
