Thompson joins the Commanders after working for the Houston Texans for the past three seasons. He most recently served as their director of team development.
Prior to the Texans, Thompson served as the character coach for the Detroit Lions from 2018-21. In 2017, Thompson was the director of player development for the Charleston Southern men's basketball team.
A native of Bolling Springs, South Carolina, Thompson attended the University of South Carolina where he played quarterback for three seasons (2012-14). In 2014, he led his team to a victory over the Miami Hurricanes in the 2014 Independence Bowl and led the SEC in several offensive categories.
Thompson was signed as an undrafted free agent by the San Francisco 49ers in 2015. He was also a member of the Los Angeles Rams during the 2017 offseason program.
