Commanders sign S Kendell Brooks, LB Chapelle Russell; release LB Keandre Jones, S Ben Nikkel

The Washington Commander have signed safety Kendell Brooks and linebacker Chapelle Russell to the active roster. In corresponding moves, they have also released linebacker Keandre Jones and safety Ben Nikkel.

Brooks, an undrafted free agent by the Arizona Cardinals in 2023, finished his college career at Michigan State after transferring there from North Greenville University. In the two seasons that Brooks played for the Spartans, he appeared in 22 games with 105 tackles, 100 of which came during his senior season in 2022. Brooks also forced three fumbles and had three pass breakups that season.

Russell was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He has appeared in 27 games, most recently with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021. Russell had 18 tackles that season to go with one start. Russell was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022 and spent the next two seasons there on the practice squad and Injured Reserve list.
