Jayden Daniels will start at quarterback for the Washington Commanders during their Week 8 matchup with the Chicago Bears.

Daniels was listed as questionable on Friday with a rib injury after going through a practice where coach Dan Quinn said the team "really pushed" the rookie to see if he was ready. He was not on the field during the practice portion open to the media but did get on the field to run through team drills. Quinn said the team needed 48 hours to assess how the quarterback felt following Friday's workload. It seems Daniels responded well and will be ready to lead the Commanders' offense against the Bears top five-ranked defense.

On Friday, the Commanders covered the game plan with Daniels, taking him and the offense through "the whole thing, all parts of the field." Over the next two days, the team will continue to follow their process to determine whether Daniels can suit up on Sunday.

"We'll make the best decision for him and for the team," Quinn said. "If he can't go, we certainly have all the confidence in Marcus [Mariota]."

Quinn said on Wednesday that Daniels was "close to there" in terms of being on the practice field, which was the next step in Daniels' recovery process. The team also wanted to be cautious when it came to letting him rejoin team activities, aside from meetings, and wanted to make sure "he can fully express himself and do all the things that he does, which makes him so unique and special," as Quinn put it.

Daniels was not initially on the field when the rest of the team came out to stretch Friday morning. Quinn said Daniels did some extra strength and conditioning during that period before putting him on the field for team drills.

Asked whether there were any limitations on Daniels during that portion of practice, Quinn said "just the opposite, in fact. We really wanted to push it today. That's why I think it's important, because you have to push it in not just the quarterback specific things, but also within the game plan.

Daniels said "I feel good" when addressing the media outside the Commanders' locker room and that he's been going through treatment so he could have a chance to get on the field and "be confident." He added that the injury does feel better compared to Sunday, but he still has "some marks I need to hit" before the team feels comfortable putting him on the field.

"Obviously, they wouldn't put me in any position they wouldn't feel comfortable in," Daniels said. "For my future, I don't want to put myself in that predicament, either."

Now that he has been good to go for today's 4:25 p.m. kickoff, Daniels will try to get the Commanders out to a 6-2 record for the first time since 2008 against No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams.

The Commanders have declared the following players as inactive for their Week 8 matchup with the Chicago Bears.

  • No. 16 QB Jeff Driskel (Emergency QB)
  • No. 22 S Darrick Forrest
  • No. 41 TE Colson Yankoff
  • No. 45 LB Dominique Hampton
  • No. 74 T Brandon Coleman
