Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn addressed the media the day after the team's 42-19 win over the Tennessee Titans to deliver some final thoughts before heading into the bye week. Here are some of the highlights from his press conference.
Some much-needed rest
Quinn started off by saying that "the needle was near empty" for his young team after three straight months of work, including training camp. He asked them to empty the tank heading into the Titans game, and they responded by putting together a complete performance to get their eighth win of the season.
Now, it's time for some rest before getting ready for a final playoff push.
"Now that we're into that spot, I am glad to talk about it with them...as we're getting ready to take that week and recharge and reset," Quinn said.
Quinn said earlier in the season that while a late bye week might not feel like an advantage at certain moments, it can be once it arrives. That statement ended up being true, because now the Commanders are getting some rest before the final four games on their schedule, all of which will be important if they end up making the playoffs. With three of those teams owning either losing or non-winning records, they are in good shape to get a postseason berth, but they cannot afford any more mistakes like they had during their three-game losing streak.
The best way to do that is to avoid looking too far down the schedule and instead focus on the week ahead.
"Literally this moment, this time, this week of practice," Quinn said. "So, the brotherhood part of it is a big piece of what we do, our play style, our identity. But coming back off the bye...I can tell you that we really need to have the discipline right at base camp just to go to the next spot."
There's a lot of confidence in Chris Rodriguez Jr.
Few, if any, players on the Commanders' roster have experienced as much movement as Chris Rodriguez Jr. He's been cut, added to the practice squad, elevated for game day, signed to the active roster and released this season. Through all that, Rodriguez has shown a high level of consistency, and he's earned the team's trust because of it.
"We really have a lot of confidence in him, and he's just somebody that through practice and through the opportunities that he gets, he really delivers on that," Quinn said
Rodriguez rewarded that trust in the fourth quarter against the Titans. Twelve of his 13 carries came during that period of the game, and he helped the Commanders seal the victory with a seven-yard touchdown. Rodriguez finished the day with 94 yards, averaging 7.2 yards per carry.
Rodriguez has waited for his opportunity, and that has earned his teammates' trust that he will deliver when called upon. With Austin Ekeler on Injured Reserve, he will likely get plenty more touches the rest of the season.
"I thought he's got good vision as a runner," Quinn said. "You're right, that he was in some four-minute ones where he has to really get downhill, and that kind of suits Chris's style of playing aggressive and getting downhill."
Quinn still has confidence in Zane Gonzalez
The Commanders had to place Austin Seibert on Injured Reserve, providing an opportunity for Zane Gonzalez, who is now on the active roster. Gonzalez was perfect against the Pittsburgh Steeler and Philadelphia Eagles but ended up missing both of his attempts against the Titans.
Despite that, Quinn still feels confident in Gonzalez and did not indicate any changes will be made at kicker at least until Seibert comes back from IR.
"We put him through all the different processes," Quinn said. "You were out here for practice early in the week, into the wind and going, so I like where he is at physically. I like things he's able to do."
Quinn did acknowledge that the kicker position has been an issue for the Commanders at various points this year because of injuries and other reasons. However, while missing two field goal attempts is not ideal, he's not going to make any other changes to the position at this time.
