The Washington Commanders have ruled out defensive end Clelin Ferrell for their Monday Night Football matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Ferrell, who first showed up on the injury report last Friday with a knee issue, did not participate in Thursday or Saturday's practices. Quinn said Ferrell's knee hasn't improved the way the staff would like, so they will wait until next week for further evaluation.
"He's a warrior presence for us in terms of the toughness and all that he brings, but it just hasn't turned quickly enough for him to be fully him," Quinn said.
Ferrell recorded both of the team's sacks in the first two weeks, and with him sitting out for Week 3, the Commanders will need to look for more pass-rush production from a unit that has been slow to gain momentum. It's possible that Jamin Davis will receive more snaps after being a healthy scratch against the New York Giants, but Quinn also highlighted draft picks Johnny Newton and Javontae Jean-Baptiste for how they worked in practice this week.
"I would say with Javonte, I've really felt the pass rush starting to turn," Quinn said. "He spent lots of time with [Defensive Line Coach] Darryl [Tapp] and [Assistant Defensive Line Coach] Ryan [Kerrigan] over the last weeks. And it doesn't come at once, these bursts, they happen again. I felt that with him this week. He'll get more reps, he's earned them, he's ready for it."
Newton, who was also on the injury report with his foot injury, was limited on Saturday but will be ready to go and set up to get more snaps than the 12 that he got against the Giants. The Commanders have been cautious with Newton since training camp, electing to bring him along slowly and get him acclimated to the speed of the NFL.
Last Sunday was his first stretch of action against another team, and Quinn was pleased with some of what he saw from the second-round pick.
"You felt the speed, you felt the movements. And we're excited to get him more reps," Quinn said.
Cornerback Emmanuel Forbes, who underwent surgery to repair his thumb last week, was limited on Friday and Saturday and will be questionable to play against the Bengals. While the Commanders will wait until Monday to make a final determination on his status, Quinn did say that "I would like to have seen more reps" and that the team is "probably shooting more towards next week" for him to play.
The rest of the players on Washington's injury report, including Dorance Armstrong, Benjamin St-Just, Quan Martin and Brandon Coleman, will be fully ready to play against the Bengals.
