The Washington Commanders have ruled out cornerback Marshon Lattimore, safety and special teams ace Tyler Owens and linebacker Jordan Magee for Sunday's matchup with the Dallas Cowboys.
Neither Lattimore (hamstring) nor Owens (ankle) practiced at all this week. Magee (hamstring) was limited on Wednesday and Thursday but was still not well enough to play in the regular season finale.
While all three players will end up getting some extra rest to recover this weekend, that didn't explicitly play a role in holding any of the players out. Head coach Dan Quinn is pleased with the progress each player has made, but none of them were close enough to play.
"All of them were pushing and close, but...on the soft tissue ones [injuries], you don't want to do it till you know," Quinn said. "That's really important, but that would have been the same in any of the weeks."
Lattimore, who reinjured the same hamstring that kept him out four games earlier this season, has been working hard to get back on the field. It sounds like Quinn believes he could be ready for the Commanders' Wild Card matchup next week. He loves the speed that Lattimore has been showing in rehab and appreciates the work he's been putting in to get himself ready for a return.
"He's certainly very close," Quinn said.
With Lattimore out, a combination of Benjamin St-Juste, Michael Davis, Noah Igbinoghene and Mike Sainristil will get more of the reps on Sunday. Each player has experienced positive and negative moments, and they'll need to take advantage of a Dallas wide receiver group that will be without CeeDee Lamb as well as an inexperienced quarterback, whether it's Trey Lance or Cooper Rush.
Running back Austin Ekeler, who is still on Injured Reserve because of a concussion, is questionable for Sunday's game after being a full participant all week. Quinn said Ekeler had a "fantastic" stretch of practices, showing solid quickness and speed, but the team will wait until later in the weekend to decide whether he will play.
Center Tyler Biadasz and tackle Cornelius Lucas both returned to practice on Friday and will be doubtful for Sunday's game. Wide receiver Dyami Brown and tackle Andrew Wylie, both of whom were limited on Thursday, were active on Friday and will be available.
Wide receiver K.J. Obsborn (illness) and long snapper Tyler Ott (personal) were added to the injury report on Friday and are also listed as questionable.
