Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels will be questionable for the team's Week 8 game against the Chicago Bears.
Daniels, who injured his ribs on the opening offensive play of the team's 40-7 win over the Carolina Panthers, did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday and was listed as a non-participant. Coach Dan Quinn said during his end of week press conference that Daniels did participate in the portion of practice that was closed off to the media on Friday.
"We followed the plan...that we set at the start of the week," Quinn said. "We will assess how he responds to the work that he did over the next 48 hours."
Quinn said the team "really pushed it today" with Daniels to see if he could execute the movements and the skill sets necessary to play the position. They also covered the game plan, taking Daniels and the offense through "the whole thing, all parts of the field." Over the next two days, the team will continue to follow their process to determine whether Daniels can suit up on Sunday.
"We'll make the best decision for him and for the team," Quinn said. "If he can't go, we certainly have all the confidence in Marcus [Mariota]."
Quinn said on Wednesday that Daniels was "close to there" in terms of being on the practice field, which was the next step in Daniels' recovery process. The team also wanted to be cautious when it came to letting him rejoin team activities, aside from meetings, and wanted to make sure "he can fully express himself and do all the things that he does, which makes him so unique and special," as Quinn put it.
Daniels was not initially on the field when the rest of the team came out to stretch Friday morning. Quinn said Daniels did some extra strength and conditioning during that period before putting him on the field for team drills.
Asked whether there were any limitations on Daniels during that portion of practice, Quinn said "just the opposite, in fact. We really wanted to push it today. That's why I think it's important, because you have to push it in not just the quarterback specific things, but also within the game plan. So, we really pushed it today, and that's really what the next day and a half will be about to see how he responds."
Daniels said "I feel good" when addressing the media outside the Commanders' locker room and that he's been going through treatment so he could have a chance to get on the field and "be confident." He added that the injury does feel better compared to Sunday, but he still has "some marks I need to hit" before the team feels comfortable putting him on the field.
"Obviously, they wouldn't put me in any position they wouldn't feel comfortable in," Daniels said. "For my future, I don't want to put myself in that predicament, either."
As for what else Daniels has been able to do this week, Quinn said Wednesday that "not a lot" has changed in terms of his preparation. He was still in meetings, worked with the virtual reality software and was on the field for walkthroughs. While he didn't participate in the practice portions of the day on Wednesday and Thursday, Quinn said "there's a lot of banked reps on the things that he's done exceptionally well."
Quinn said Monday he was "hopeful" that Daniels could play against the Bears. The Commanders have followed the process they created to get there, with Quinn using the "crawl, walk, run" metaphor he's used with other players. Friday was the "run" portion of the process, and while Quinn did not provide a full assessment of how Daniels did, they have at least hit every step to make sure he could play if he's deemed healthy enough to do so.
And of course, Daniels wants to play and help the Commanders earn a 6-2 record for the first time since 2008, but the quarterback also said "it's not my decision."
"I got 48 hours to see how I feel, and we'll just go from there," Daniels said.
Brandon Coleman (concussion) has been ruled out of Sunday's game. Dorance Armstrong, who has dealt with a rib injury is listed as questionable. The rest of the players on Washington's injury report will be available for the weekend.
