Redskins cornerback Josh Norman added to his community outreach resume Thursday, donating $18,000 to an immigrant detention center in McAllen, Texas. His donation helped fund the center's efforts in combating the U.S. border crisis.
Norman has been active in aiding the border crisis. Last summer, Norman filled dozens of Walmart shopping carts with toys, books and schools supplies in San Antonio. He delivered them to children at local detention centers.
"We all see it, but nobody's moving to action," he told The Washington Post last year. "And to be honest with you, I would actually like to have done more. ...It was needed."
Also last year, Norman crossed the U.S. and Mexico border and shared his view on how a wall on the border proposed by the U.S. government would impact immigrants.
Supporting the immigrant detention center is the latest of a long list charitable work Norman has done this offseason. In the months before mandatory minicamp in June, Norman traveled to Flint, Michigan to help with the water crisis and hosted his seventh annual celebrity basketball game in North Carolina. He's also flown with U.S. Navy Blue Angels and met with the Afghanistan's Minister of Education at the Afghanistan Embassy in D.C.
"A lot of people, we have the common decency. We have the most necessary necessities like water, a bed, food," Norman said during minicamp. "We go to sleep at night, we wake up, put on our shoes and go to work. Some people, they don't have that, at all. They don't even have a cot to sleep on. So just be mindful of that and understand that there's a lot of people out there that are worse off than us."
