There was a bit more camouflage on the field and in the Redskins locker room on Wednesday.
As part of Military Appreciation Month being celebrated throughout the entire month of November in the NFL and the fact that it was Veterans Day, players shared some of their thoughts on Twitter and with the media about the day and what it means to them.
To honor the day, wide receiver Andre Roberts also spoke at the podium about being announced as the Redskins' Salute To Service Award Recipient, presented annually by the USAA and NFL to recognize an individual "who demonstrates an exemplary commitment to honoring and supporting the military community."
Andre Roberts (on his award):
"Both my parents were in the Army. It was an easy avenue for me to get into, especially coming from The Citadel, going to a military school. It was an easy avenue to get into. Like I've said, it's just a blessing to be able to work with the kids. I love working with kids. It doesn't matter if they're military or not, but being a part of that family and understanding what some of these kids have to go through with the military aspect of moving and things of that nature, losing parents, it's just a blessing to be able to work with them."
Jason Hatcher:
"I appreciate those guys so much. I can wake up and I can walk around feeling safe. They really protect our country."
Darrel Young:
"Thank you to all the vets out there and all they've done for us. Today is special. I have a brother in [the military] and I understand what the families go through of these troops that go overseas; whether it is six months, two months, or a year. Unfortunately, there are some people that don't come back home, but those people put their lives on the line for us to go out there and do what we do and love to do on a daily basis; which is just being human, eating McDonalds, and doing our jobs.
"When you do have military troops out there and you have [tough] days like this you're easily reminded that there is always someone in a more dangerous situation than what we're going through. Just because I unfortunately may have missed a block or something, there is someone out there that is getting shot at. You just get over whatever I'm going through and support what everyone else is going through."
