Redskins Sign Linebacker Pernell McPhee

The Washington Redskins have added eight-year veteran linebacker Pernell McPhee in free agency. For his career, McPhee has appeared in 96 games and collected 31 sacks.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

McPhee, 29, joins the Redskins after splitting his first seven NFL seasons between the Baltimore Ravens and Chicago Bears.

For his career, McPhee has collected 182 tackles (139 solo) along with 31 sacks, 12 passes defensed, six fumbles forced and one interception.

In six of his first seven seasons, McPhee has forced a fumble.

Last season with the Bears, McPhee appeared in 13 games with five starts, totaling 21 tackles (20 solo) along with four sacks, two passes defensed and one fumble forced.

In his first season in Chicago in 2015, the Mississippi State product appeared in 14 games with a career-high 12 starts. In total, he recorded a career-high 53 tackles along with six sacks, three passes defensed, one interception and one fumble forced.

Prior to his time with the Bears, McPhee spent his first four seasons with the Ravens.

During the 2014 season, the 6-foot-3, 269 pounder tallied a career-high 7.5 sacks despite not starting any of his 16 regular season appearances. After not recording a sack through Baltimore's first four games, McPhee recorded four sacks in the Ravens' next three games including a pair off Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, the first multi-sack game of his career.

McPhee ended the season with a two-sack performance against the Cleveland Browns.

As a rookie during the 2011 season, the Orlando, Fla., native appeared in 16 games, accumulating 23 tackles with six sacks and two passes defensed.

He originally entered the professional ranks as fifth round selection in the 2011 NFL Draft.

With his addition, McPhee joins the likes of Ryan Kerrigan, Preston Smith and Ryan Anderson at the outside linebacker position.

Trent Murphy signed with the Buffalo Bills on the first day of free agency while Junior Galette remains on the open market.

McPhee is also the second defensive addition for Washington in free agency, joining former Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick who signed with the Redskins last week.
