Redskins punter Tress Way was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his five punts that totaled 290 yards in the team's 29-21 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
Way, who has been with the Redskins since 2014, averaged 58 yards per punt and had two punts downed inside the 20-yard line. The average is Way's highest of the season and second-highest of his career.
The Redskins claimed Way off waivers ahead of the 2014 season after he was waived by the Chicago Bears, and he has been one of the most reliable players on the Redskins' roster since. He's averaged at least 45 yards per punt in every season he has been a part of the team.
Way has also developed a knack for pinning offenses deep in their own territory. Prior to the Redskins Week 5 matchup against the New England Patriots, Way had 115 punts without a touchback dating back to the 2017 season. During that span, 48.7% of those punts landed inside the 20-yard line.
This year, Way has punted the ball 60 times for 2,996 yards for an average of 49.9 yards through 12 games. In last Sunday's win over the Panthers, he booted a punt 79 yards, which is a career-high.
This is the second time Way has won the award. His first win came on Nov. 14, 2018, for his five-punt, 247-yard game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
