Running back Brian Robinson Jr. is trending in the right direction to play in the Washington Commanders' Week 5 matchup against the Cleveland Browns but will be a game time decision, head coach Dan Quinn confirmed in his Friday press conference.
Robinson, who ranks 10th in rushing yards and first on the team in scrimmage yards (375) showed up on the injury report with a knee injury and did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday. He made his return to the field on Friday.
Though much of the national attention has been centered around Jayden Daniels with his poise and record-setting accuracy, Robinson has been the Commanders' most reliable weapon through four games. He is often the team's go-to option on third downs, an area where the Commanders are first in the league with their 53.5 conversion percentage. The Commanders have accumulated 44.2% of their first downs by running the ball -- sixth most in the league.
"He is one of the most physical runners I've seen," said offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. "I think the stuff he can do in the pass game is underrated, and we gotta continue to find ways to get him touches."
Should Robinson be unavailable, the Commanders will look to Austin Ekeler, who cleared the concussion protocol and will play on Sunday, and Jeremy McNichols after the career-high 68 rushing yards and two touchdowns he had against the Cardinals. It's possible the Commanders would also elevate one of their running backs from the practice squad to provide more depth at the position on gameday.
At receiver, Daniels will be without Noah Brown, who was downgraded from limited to a nonparticipant on Thursday and Friday. Brown has been solid pickup for the Commanders in recent weeks with nine receptions on 10 targets for 111 yards, including a 56-yard performance against the New York Giants. His absence will mean that receivers like Dyami Brown, one of the team's skill players that stood out in training camp, should have more opportunities.
While the Commanders are still deliberating on whether players like Efe Obada and Jordan Magee can be activated over the weekend, the defense will be without defensive end Clelin Ferrell for the third consecutive game.
As for the remaining players on Washington's injury report, Nick Allegretti (ankle), Percy Butler (groin), Marcus Mariota (pectoral) and Tyler Owens (shin) are all questionable. Magee and Obada are listed as doubtful. Emmanuel Forbes Jr. (thumb), Dominique Hampton (illness), Quan Martin (shoulder) and Jer'Zhan Newton (foot) will all be available.
