Linebacker David Mayo
Washington seems to have sured up its linebacker corps with the reported signing of 27-year-old David Mayo.
A fifth-round pick in 2015, Mayo played his first four NFL seasons under Rivera with the Panthers. After a short stint with the San Francisco 49ers, he signed with the New York Giants in 2019 and had a career year, starting 13 games and recording 82 tackles (five for a loss), two sacks and two passes defensed.
Unfortunately, he tore his meniscus before Week 1 of this past season and spent the first five weeks on Injured Reserve. He returned in a reserve role and led the team with nine special teams tackles in 11 games.
Center Tyler Larsen
Washington looks to have added to its offensive line with the reported signing of 29-year-old Tyler Larsen.
An undrafted free agent in 2014, Larsen was waived before final roster cuts his first two seasons before catching on with the Panthers in 2016. He spent the past five years there and appeared in 68 games (18 starts). He is also familiar with with current Washington offensive line coach John Matsko, who coached him in Carolina from 2016-19.
Cornerback Danny Johnson
It looks like Danny Johnson will be back in Washington for 2021, according to ESPN's John Keim.
Johnson, who went undrafted, has been with Washington since 2018. He appeared in 30 games (three starts) over the past three seasons and served as the team's primary kick returner in 2020, averaging 22.5 yards per return.
Wide receiver Curtis Samuel
Samuel was one of offensive coordinator Scott Turner's favorite weapons when he was calling plays for the Carolina Panthers in the final four games of the 2019 season. Now, it seems he'll have the 24-year-old receiver at his disposal in Washington.
Samuel, who the Panthers drafted in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft, has spent much of his time as a receiver, but his speed and versatility has allowed him to be a more complete offensive player. He has gradually improved his yardage as a rusher and pass catcher in each season and amassed 2,565 total scrimmage yards.
Samuel is coming off his best season with 77 receptions for 851 yards, 41 carries for 200 rushing yards and five total touchdowns. Pro Football Focus gave him the highest overall grade (77.0) of his career for his efforts. With Samuel reportedly joining McLaurin and the rest of Washington's speedy playmakers, the team's offense has the chance to make improvements from 2020.
Tackle David Sharpe
Washington traded for Sharpe before Week 1 and mostly used him for depth. He appeared in 10 games and made two starts, both of which came when Geron Christian Sr. and Cornelius Lucas were sidelined with injuries.
Running back Lamar Miller
Miller was a late addition to Washington's roster last year after Antonio Gibson suffered a turf toe injury in December. He did not appear in a game, but Rivera recognized his value should the team be placed in an emergency situation at running back. Miller has eight years of experience -- more than any other running back on Washington's roster -- so he will continue to add veteran leadership to the position.
Cornerback William Jackson III
On Monday, former Washington cornerback Ronald Darby reportedly reached an agreement with the Denver Broncos. A day later, the team seems to have found his replacement.
A first-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, William Jackson III started 48 games over his first four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. He has three career interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) to go along with 41 passes defensed and 150 total tackles. In its free agent rankings, Pro Football Focus had Jackson as the No. 1 cornerback and the 16th-best player overall.
Wide Receiver Cam Sims
The Washington Football Team placed a tender on restricted free agent Cam Sims Tuesday afternoon.
Sims, who is entering his fourth season, had a career-high performance in 2020 with 477 yards. Sims became a key component to Washington's offense after catching his first-career touchdown against the New York Giants in Week 6, which brought the team within two points of taking the lead. From that point on, Sims appeared in at least 75% of the offensive snaps in each contest.
Sims was the No. 2 receiver opposite of Terry McLaurin and had several standout performances, including his first 100-yard game against the Giants in Week 9 and 92 yards in Washington's upset over the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers. He caught 66.7% of his targets and finished second among receivers in yardage.
"The way Cam Sims practices and the things he's capable of doing as an athlete, they're pretty impressive," head coach Ron Rivera said. "He's a heck of a football player and I just think he's going to get better and better as he continues to work on his game."
Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick
Ryan Fitzpatrick made his first-career NFL start against Washington more than 15 years ago. Now it being reported that the 38-year-old is going to join the burgundy and gold.
A seventh-round pick in 2005, Fitzpatrick has made 146 starts for eight franchises, completing more than 60% of his passes for nearly 35,000 yards and 223 touchdowns compared to 169 interceptions.
In Washington, he'll be a part of a quarterback room that also includes Kyle Allen and Taylor Heinicke.
Kicker Dustin Hopkins
Hopkins' sixth season in Washington was his worst in terms of field goal percentage (79.4), but he found his rhythm during the second half of the year to help lead the team to the postseason. From Week 9 on, he was tied for third in the league with 19 field goals and converted 86.4% of his attempts.
