Believe it or not, there was a time when Washington Redskins tackle Willie Smith – who is listed at 6-foot-5, 310 pounds – played not only tight end, but receiver as well.
Really.
Smith – who was signed by the Redskins yesterday – played wide receiver while at North Johnson (N.C.) High School and even some tight end during his four-year career at East Carolina.
"They would send a few people out to catch a ball man, it was fun," Smith told Redskins.com in 2011. "I actually had like one year – or half a year – at East Carolina, at tight end."
While he would eventually transition into his present day role of tackle during his time at East Carolina, the big man never forgot the feeling of everyone looking for him to make the big play.
"It was fun to get everybody cheering your name, because on the line, you know, you get no credit," he said with a laugh. "They only know you if you blew it! But yeah, man, it was definitely a fun experience."
Smith would get his NFL start with the Redskins in 2011, appearing in four games with three starts.
He's also played for the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers.
