Basketball seems to be the theme for today's Throwback Thursday.
After Jason Hatcher posted a photo dunking during his high school days, defensive lineman Chris Baker continued the trend, this time with a basketball team photo from his time at Windsor [Conn.] High School.
As he mentions in his post, his longtime best friend and new teammate Terrance "Pot Roast" Knighton, is also featured in the picture to the right of Baker. Like Hatcher, Knighton gave up football midway through high school until his mother forced him back onto the field.
"I had a little game," Knighton said recently on "Redskins Nation." "I could play No. 3 or No. 4 depending on what the matchups were. I had a little trey-ball [three-point shot]. I could throw it down a little bit. I still can dunk now so… I'm 6'3", my arms are long. I have to jump pretty high."
It was harder to convince Baker to focus on football, though, who believed he was the next Shaquille O'Neal on the court.
"In high school I was like, 'Bro, you're still 6-2 so I think you might want to play football," Knighton said he told Baker. "He peaked at like fifth grade. I said, 'You might as well play football.' He was like, 'All right, I'll give it a try.' Now look at him. We always talked about playing on the same team, and you know we didn't go to the same college, and we talked about maybe one day in the NFL. Now that dream has come true."
This past summer Baker began his own foundation to promote literacy, which included two Windsor elementary schools.
"Windsor means a lot to me," Baker told the Hartford Courant. "I'm just trying to make a positive influence on all the youth coming up. Let them know that if you want to succeed you have to work hard and you have to strive to be the best at everything that you do, whether it's education or sports."
This picture encapsulates that message perfectly. I'm not sure why everyone is wearing a tuxedo, but these guys clearly enjoyed balancing basketball with books.
