During Wednesday's press conference, Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins took some time to discuss the upcoming matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.
However, it was Cousins' new threads that caught everyone's attention. The quarterback was sporting a t-shirt with the image of an old Buffalo nickel embossed on the front. Cousins said fans can purchase both men’s and women’s versions of the t-shirts on his website, and that a portion of the proceeds will be donated to charity.
"We definitely are going to give a portion to charity to IJM [International Justice Mission] and just kind of have fun with it and see where it goes," Cousins said.
IJM is an organization that seeks to protect people in developing countries from crime. According to its website, IJM has more than 750 lawyers, investigators and activists working around the world.
The Buffalo nickel itself was produced by the United States Mint between 1913 and 1938. One side depicts the profile of a Native American that closely resembles the Redskins' logo, and the image of an American bison is imprinted on the back.
"I thought it was cool. Our equipment managers pointed it out to me and it looks and awful lot like our Redskins logo," Cousins said. "So, yeah, we put it on a shirt and we are selling them on my website, but, yeah, it is kind of fun."
While Buffalo nickels are no longer minted, the same images can be found on the American Buffalo gold bullion coins, which were first produced in 2006 and continue to run today.
