Washington Redskins great Darrell Green will host his annual University of Mary Washington (UMW) Athletics Gala on May 21.
The gala is to support the university's athletic department, whose conference receives the smallest portion of allocations for its sports programs from the NCAA.
In 2014, the event raised $45,000. The athletic department is hopeful to reach its $50,000 goal this year. Current Redskins Alfred Morris and Ryan Kerrigan will headline the fundraiser.
Green joined UMW's athletic department as a special assistant for student-athlete development and public relations in 2013. Green, who attended a small college like UMW (Texas A&I), said joining the department "felt like home."
At UMW, more than 450 student-athletes compete in 23 sports while pursuing a degree. The athletic department's mission is to engage the community to teach, support and celebrate the university's student-athletes in their quest for excellence.
The event will host a maximum of 220 people. The remaining seats cost $130, while tables of 10 cost $1,000.
The doors of UMW's Jepson Alumni Executive Centerwill open at 6 p.m. The event will begin with a silent auction, followed by dinner and presentation from Green.
