Yesterday, author George R.R. Martin stopped by New York Jets training camp, and presumably the same fear emanated from their locker room as it has at the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center: That someone would be discussing "Game Of Thrones."
Not that the act itself provokes fear, but when you haven't caught up with the final season of the HBO show, you're worried someone will spoil an ending for you.
NFL locker rooms are prime positions for this type of banter, and it seems as though the Redskins have been struggling with this dilemma. At least some of them.
As detailed in a light-hearted, but insightful Wall Street Journal Article, tight end Niles Paul has proven himself to be the ultimate Throne watcher, having seen each episode twice. He doesn't have time for people, namely running back Silas Redd. Jr., who are still behind after it finished its fifth season in June.
"If you don't know that Jon Snow died, if you don't know what the White Walkers are, that's not my problem," said Paul, referencing a character that presumably died. "It means you aren't a fan and you don't watch the show."
Those are high standards. Center Kory Lichtensteiger agrees.
"I'll wait a couple of days," Lichtensteiger said. "But I mean, if you haven't watched it by then, close your ears. Earmuffs. I want to talk about it."
For tight end Logan Paulsen, who has a young son to attend to, staying up to date every week on a particular show is more than a challenge, especially for someone who enjoys rotating through a diversity of shows.
"Just have to make sure you don't come into a 'Game of Thrones' conversation accidentally," said Paulsen, who is two seasons behind "Thrones."
"When Jon Snow died, we were hurt, very hurt," Paul said, speaking for the team. "But I've been following the theories on the Internet so they've got to bring him back."
