Redskins tight end Niles Paul, who re-signed with the team on Friday, caught up with Larry Michael, Voice of the Redskins, on "Redskins Nation" to discuss his excitement about returning with the burgundy and gold.
A lot of that excitement was channeled toward new offensive line coach Bill Callahan.
Paul played football for four years at Nebraska, where Callahan coached him during his first season with the Cornhuskers in 2007.
Now, they'll get to reunite.
"He's an amazing coach," Paul said. "In Nebraska, everybody referred to him as the 'Mad Scientist.' We had a playbook, like a dictionary, at Nebraska, and he'd be there thinking up plays and different ways to get people to 'ball,' or different running schemes. Everybody loved him at Nebraska, he was just a great person to be around."
Paul said having to quickly learn and process the anthology of plays and schemes jumpstarted his college career and prepared him immensely for the rigors of understanding NFL playbook complexities.
"It helped me a lot because Coach Callahan expected me to come in as a true freshman and retain the information that he was giving us," Paul said. "I did just that and was able to play my freshman year. It absolutely helped me out when it came to coming to a different team and being able to pick up on the playbook."
