Besides desiring tough, physical football players for his team's roster, general manager Scot McCloughan has also made an emphasis in acquiring "good guys," the players that lift an organization based on the way they act in the locker room and in their local communities.
The latest addition to the Redskins, running back Pierre Thomas, fits this kind of mold.
Spending his first eight years in the league with the Saints, Thomas made a large imprint in the communities surrounding New Orleans. So much so, he was named the Saints' 2013 nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award.
Thomas formed the iCAN Foundation, a non-profit public charity that helps prevent and educate youth and adults about the ongoing rise of childhood obesity in the U.S. It helps promote healthy lifestyles through physical activities and proper dieting.
He's also hosted an annual Prom of Champions event where 200 youth battling blood disorders and varying cancers are invited to attend with a guest.
If that weren't enough, Thomas has also been active on the horticultural front by planting edible gardens at schools in his hometown and also led Let's Mov! Move Your Body Flash Workouts with kids, two areas of interest he has continued to support through today.
Thomas was born in Chicago's Southside and went to college at Illinois. The team heads to Chicago on Saturday for their game against the Bears. You could say he'll feel at home.
