Sean Taylor, who would have turned 32 years old a little more than a week ago, will be inducted posthumously into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame Thursday night.
The former hard-hitting Redskins safety, who tragically passed away in 2007, spent four years in Washington and was a member of the Hurricanes' 2001 national title team.
"Just to hear that his college has recognized him is awesome,'' said Pedro "Pete" Taylor, Sean's father, to the Miami Herald.
Pete, who serves as the police chief of Florida City, will accept the award for his son.
"Sean would have been elated," he said. "When the University of Miami opened their doors to him, they let a young kid with big dreams become part of their family. I'm truly grateful, and he would have been, too.''
Taylor, who was inducted into the Washington Redskins Ring of Fame in 2008, led the nation with 10 interceptions in college in 2003, later becoming a consensus All-American and Jim Thorpe Award finalist.
Other notables that will join Taylor's class are former NFL linebacker Jonathan Vilma and respected former Miami offensive coordinator and current Indianapolis Colts associate head coach Rob Chudzinski.
Also joining the class is Lauryn Williams, a nine-time All-American track runner and Olympic medalist in both the Winter and Summer games.
She went to Miami during the same time as Taylor, and the two would eat lunch together every week.
"Sean was pretty goofy, but definitely not the flamboyant type,'' she said. "More quiet than anything. We were teenagers, but we'd talk like old people who were so wise.''
